Trafalgar Ales & Meads was established in 1994 by Mike and Nancy Arnold and George Hengstman. For many years the brewery grew, and maintained close ties to the Oakville community. Much of the brewery’s identity was closely tied to the shipping and Great Lakes trading history of Oakville as a port.
In 1997 Trafalgar acquired and began to operate the Old Mill Brewery in Elora, Ontario. The association brought about some tasty brews – Elora Irish Ale, Special Bitter, and Grand Lager. In 2000, due to logistical and budgetary constraints, the brewery and storefront in Elora were shut down. Production of the Elora brands continued, however, in Oakville.
Around this time Trafalgar began ramping up its production of Mead, using authentic methods and ingredients to create an alcoholic drink basically nonexistent in Ontario’s market. Today, Trafalgar continues to be an innovator and producer of unique brews that are often underrepresented in Ontario’s market.
